Simon founded Forest Moor recognising the huge role that forests and other natural areas play in absorbing and storing carbon dioxide, and the importance of preserving our forests for climate regulation, for biodiversity and for local people. His work for the world's forests started at Friends of the Earth where he carried out research into imported timber and timber products for the initial stage of the Tropical Rainforests campaign in the mid-80s. This work fed into the establishment of certified timber products under the Forest Stewardship Council. Simon went on to work in forestry in Britain, specialising in the management of native woodlands for biodiversity benefits and for the production of hardwood, with its potential to displace imported timber. He has also established many areas of new native woodlands. He has agroforestry experience in Britain and overseas in India, Spain and Brazil. He has a Master's Degree in Environmental Forestry and is a Chartered Forester (Professional Member of Institute of Chartered Foresters)
