The EU Emissions Trading Scheme is trading carbon credits at around €20 per tonne. While the regulated industries in the EU are obliged to trade within this market, businesses offsetting on a voluntary basis have the option of buying into the EU Emissions Trading Scheme or of sourcing from the voluntary offset sector. We aim to be competitive with this regulated market, as well as with other providers of voluntary offsets, whose prices show considerable variation. See for example the Carbon Offset Survey on Eco Business Links.
At the same time, we need to make sure that the price of the offsets reflect the true costs of absorbing and storing carbon. Of course, these costs vary between the different projects, but our portfolio approach allows us to spread the cost variations as well as the risks.
The price is very close to the common average at around £10 per tonne.
