The world faces a number of pressing challenges. Scientific evidence implicates greenhouse gas emissions in changing the global climate. Poverty persists around the world. Biodiversity loss continues, especially in tropical forests. These problems are interconnected, for example increased poverty can lead to pressure on forests, and forest destruction releases carbon dioxide. Well-designed land management projects can address several problems at the same time. Deforestation accounts for around 20% of global carbon emissions. Emissions from deforestation between 2008-2012 are expected to be greater than the total aviation emissions from the invention of the flying machine until at least 2025 (Global Canopy Programme). Peatlands are the largest terrestrial store of biomass carbon. It is essential that proper protection is afforded these major sources of carbon, and finance from carbon offsets represent the best opportunity for achieving this.
